To avoid mass events showing, treat it more like a 'note'.
Add text to the 'month note' for an overview. 
Clicking the month can take you to the month view.

This is becoming more and more important for me!
Looking at a season to plan out what training to do is so helpful for coaches...
I was thinking maybe a year calendar with dots instead of full information bars.
A scrolling month view would also help as an alternative...
